The Ethics of Thought Experiments – Controversial Truths – Free Thinker’s Bible
The Ethics of Thought Experiments, Free Thinker’s Bible with Insight
Extreme hypotheticals (trolley problems, veil of ignorance) risk: 1) Creating artificial moral binaries 2) Ignoring embodied context 3) Privileging abstract reasoning over wisdom 4) Becoming intellectual parlor games. Neuroscience reveals our “moral reasoning” is often post-hoc justification for emotional responses. Better approach: a) Ground hypotheticals in real historical analogs b) Recognize multiple ethical frameworks c) Include emotional intelligence d) Accept moral uncertainty. At FreeThinkersBible.com, we’ve developed “3D ethics” exercises incorporating narrative, emotion and reason. The most ethical thinking may reject false either/or constructions altogether.
